🚌 Departure from Paros
📍Ferries leave from Parikia Port, the main port of Paros, right on the waterfront of Parikia town. Ticket offices, cafés and shops are close to the quay. Check your ticket for the departure quay and arrive in good time for boarding.
🚇Parikia port is an easy walk from most of the town's hotels. From other villages such as Naoussa or Lefkes, take the local bus to Parikia or a taxi. Keep luggage handy, as the port area gets busy before departures.
⏰Departures are usually more frequent in summer and thinner in low season. Timetables change by season and by company, so always check your exact date on the booking page before planning the rest of your trip.

Practical tips

💡
Book early in summer

Summer sailings between the Cyclades and Athens can sell out, especially at weekends and in August. Book your ferry as soon as your dates are fixed, and keep the flight as a backup if your preferred boat is full.

💡
Check the Athens arrival port

Athens has three ferry ports: Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio. Read your ticket carefully before paying and plan your onward transfer to your hotel, the metro or the airport from that specific port, not from a generic Athens address.

💡
Leave a buffer before flights home

Wind can delay or cancel sailings. If you have an international flight out of Athens, do not take the last boat of the day before it. Arrive in Athens the day before, or choose the flight from Paros.

💡
Compare conventional and fast boats

Different companies sail the same route with different boats, times and fares. Compare them on the booking page: conventional ferries are calmer and often cheaper, while faster vessels save time but are more affected by rough seas.

💡
Choose the flight when time matters

If you have a tight schedule, a late arrival or a connection at Athens airport, the flight is usually the safer choice. Keep your luggage within airline limits and allow time to reach Paros airport from your accommodation.

The journey experience

Getting from Paros to Athens comes down to one simple choice: the ferry or a short domestic flight. The ferry is the classic, scenic option, with open decks, a café on board and plenty of room for your luggage. The flight suits you when your schedule is tight or the sea looks rough. The comparison table on this page puts duration, price range and frequency side by side, so you can decide quickly.

Several companies can operate this crossing, and conventional ferries and faster vessels may sail on the same day with different departure times, comfort levels and fares. Conventional boats offer a relaxed pace and seating lounges. Faster boats shorten the sailing but are more exposed to strong winds. Flying from Paros is straightforward with hand luggage and lands you at Athens airport, handy for onward flights or the airport metro.

Before you book, check which Athens port your ferry arrives at (Piraeus, Rafina or Lavrio), as they are far apart and your hotel or onward connection may suit one better. In high season, book ahead so you are not stuck on the island, and leave a buffer if you have a flight home the same day. Wind can disrupt sailings, but a flexible plan keeps you calm.

What to do in Athens?

Local experiences, must-see sights and activities selected for you

MUST-SEE
🏛️
Acropolis and the Parthenon
Athens' defining monument. Arrive at opening (8am) or after 5pm in summer to avoid heat and tour groups. Entry is around 30€ in high season, and the combined ticket (about 30€) covers six other sites. Wear shoes with grip: the marble is very slippery.
🏺
New Acropolis Museum
Home to the original sculptures and friezes from the Acropolis, displayed under a glass floor above an excavated ancient neighborhood. Tickets cost about 20€. Visit in the late afternoon after the Acropolis, and have a drink on the terrace café with its view of the Parthenon.
🏟️
Ancient Agora and Temple of Hephaestus
The civic heart of classical Athens, where Socrates once debated. The Temple of Hephaestus is the best-preserved Doric temple in Greece. Entry is about 10€ or included in the combined ticket. Go early, bring water, and allow 1.5 hours. The Stoa of Attalos houses a small museum.
🗿
Changing of the Guard, Syntagma
The Evzones, in traditional uniform, guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of Parliament. A short ceremony takes place every hour, and the full ceremony with a band happens on Sundays at 11am. It is free. Arrive 10 minutes early to get a front spot.
🥙
Street Food at Monastiraki
Try a pork or chicken gyros wrapped in pita with tzatziki, fries and tomato, for about 3 to 4€. Add loukoumades (honey doughnuts) for dessert. Avoid the restaurants right on the main square, and walk a few streets into the side lanes for better quality and prices.
🌅
Sunset on Lycabettus Hill
The highest point in central Athens, at 277 m, with a 360° view over the city, the Acropolis and the sea. Walk up in about 20 minutes from Kolonaki, or take the funicular for about 10€ round trip. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset and bring a light jacket for the wind.
🏺
National Archaeological Museum
Greece's finest collection, including the Mask of Agamemnon, the Antikythera mechanism and the bronze Poseidon. Tickets cost about 12€. Plan 2 to 3 hours and focus on the Mycenaean and sculpture rooms. Less crowded than the Acropolis area, and a good option on a hot afternoon.
🌊
Cape Sounion Temple at Sunset
The Temple of Poseidon stands on a cliff about 70 km south of Athens, with views over the Aegean. Take the KTEL coastal bus from Pedion Areos (about 7€ one way, 2 hours). Entry costs around 10€. Arrive 1 hour before sunset, and check the last bus back before you go.

How long to visit Athens?

2 to 5 days

Allow 3 days to cover Athens properly: day one for the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum and Plaka; day two for the Ancient Agora, Monastiraki, Thissio and the National Archaeological Museum; day three for a day trip to Cape Sounion or the Saronic islands. With only 2 days, skip the day trip and start at the Acropolis at opening time to beat the heat and the crowds. With 4 or 5 days, add Delphi or Nafplio.
